Now That We’re Gone – Canyon Spells

Fat Stacks - Canyon SpellsNow That We’re Gone, the highly anticipated debut album from Canyon Spells is out now. Perennial favorites of The Outlaw Roadshow, the Nashville-based indie rock band, have time and again to offer some of the best songwriting and hooks in contemporary music. Today we have the debut of the band’s lyric video for the track, “Fat Stacks.” It’s an amusing and pointed look at equating goals related to wealth with love, prosperity and happiness.

The band’s choice of two drum-playing accompaniment in the lyric video is impossible to break away from, even though the action has nothing at all to do with the subject matter. Sense of humor is important to this band.

“A lot of the album is poking at the culture of our generation and this constant barrage of social media that most people seem to have just accepted,” says songwriter Jimmie Linville, adding: “It affects everything: love, relationships, hopes, dreams… and the music explores that, but with a chip on its shoulder.”

I want our readers to know one thing: this album is amazing and should prove to be one of the best of 2016. Produced and recorded in Chicago by Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine, Josh Ritter), Now That We’re Gone announces itself as an album built on tension and primed for transcendence with its harmonized guitar solos and soaring vocals. The album’s immediate sense of urgency stems from an incident that occurred while the band was on tour in April 2015 when an SUV unhitched from a car carrier on the opposite side of the freeway, launched across the median, and smashed head-on into the car beside them. “The whole experience really reminded me how important it is to be brave in what we’re doing,” says Canyon Spells’ singer and primary songwriter Jimmie Linville. “The accident gave us permission, in a way. It reminded us that we might not ever get another chance.”

Rattled but emboldened by their brush with disaster, Canyon Spells began tracking Now That We’re Gone within days. Canyon Spells regard Now That We’re Gone as a mark of their commitment to the truth, almost to a fault, in their songwriting. “These songs don’t try to teach you, or tell you what to do,” Linville says. “They’re putting it down there on the floor, spreading it out, and saying ‘This is how it is. This is the truth. Do with it what you will.’

Three Outlaw Bands Share The Stage 5/27

On Friday, May 27 – The Outlaw Roadshow presents a stellar lineup for the ages at The Bowery Ballroom featuring three of the most celebrated bands from our our many live music lineups – all in one place..

Some of the most skilled young music talent in America today, Filligar have gone from upstart heartbreakers to the top of America’s Live Music List. Anyone who has seen them will agree! This will be one of the Chicago’s band’s many Outlaw Roadshow appearances – most notably in the national tour with Counting Crows.

Completely caught by surprise, I was mesmerized upon first listen of Rainbow Kitten Surprise – the latest STUNNING rock act to join our long line of bands. A truly outstanding live set and an emotive, driven tempo demonstrate why this is one of Spotify‘s red hot favorites these days. This will be RKS’s big return to New York. They played a truly OUTSTANDING live set for us last fall. (The Outlaw returns to NY again this October! *)

New York’s own Matt Sucich needs little introduction in this city. As a celebrated mainstay, he has earned special distinction the last few years playing the industry’s biggest music events, bowling over audiences wherever he goes (both unplugged and rockin’) Matt will be playing this show with his band here – you will see them all at their very best!

Bound to Meet the Devil – Julie Rhodes

One of the top albums of 2016 by Outlaw Alum Julie Rhodes.  When Julie Rhodes lets her voice loose, she digs deep into a pocket of soul that persuades audiences to follow her lead. Just a year ago, Rhodes began work on her debut album, Bound to Meet the Devil. The songs speak to a year of travel, passion, and sacrifice, as she matured quickly from playing her first shows to a performer who owns the stage. Rhodes always set her resolve on music and the road. The day she was able, she charged out of her hometown, searching for live performances that tugged on her heart strings. But it wasn’t until she attended the Newport Folk Festival—witnessing a lineup with an infectious spirit for collaboration and a genuine optimism for the vitality of community—that her desire to travel shifted from pursuing other’s voices to discovering her own. Produced by Jonah Tolchin and infused with the sounds that inspired her to roam, Bound to Meet the Devil was recorded in New England and Muscle Shoals, Alabama, capturing the spirit found in dive bars, barns, and the throng of outdoor festivals by the sea. Her songs explore the mounting struggles of a working class woman with few riches beyond a determination to dream.
